Belbury Poly remix Bill Ryder-Jones

Leyland Kirby, Moon Wiring Club and I were recently invited by Domino records to remix tracks from the current album If... by Bill Ryder-Jones. Performed by the Liverpool Philharmonic and various guests its the first solo album for the ex Coral guitarist turned composer and is conceived of as a soundtrack to Italo Calvino's novel If On A Winter’s Night A Traveller.

Domino say "Grand orchestral movements sit side by side with stark, nakedly emotional vocal pieces that weave a a bleak but beautifully moving and always visceral narrative." The three remixes here represent very different approaches to the source material by three artists that like Ryder-Jones share an interest in memory and the uncanny.

The Belbury Tales (pre-order now for 24th Feb)

The new album from The Belbury Poly, The Belbury Tales is due out on the 24th February. This time round the album explores ideas about the re-invention of the past and along the way spins some tall tales about childhood, the supernatural, initiation and pilgrimage (both spiritual and physical). A concept album in the spirit of British prog, its appropriately dressed up in even more lavish than usual Julian House artwork featuring a wonderful piece of Belbury based fiction by Electric Eden author and journalist, Rob Young.

For several tracks on this album the Belbury sound is augmented by two very talented guest musicians: drummer Jim Musgrave (Land Equivalents) and bassist and guitarist Christopher Budd (Chris also dreamt up and co-wrote the track Earthlights) .

Black Mill Tapes: Volume 3 - coming soon

The Head Technician at Pye Corner Audio kindly sent me a promo of the latest Volume in The Black Mill Tapes series and it seems he's save the best till last. This is the most fully realised of the lot so far and really cements the Pye Corner Audio sound in a world of rain swept, industrial spaces and forlorn dance floors. That's not to say this is a bleak or miserbalist affair - the tunes range from melancholy to awe-inspiring to damned funky.

Another of the vicar's partisan reviews maybe - but I strongly recommend you give this a try. You can get it here on 24th January.

Also I'd like to share the exciting news that Pye Corner Audio are working on an album for Ghost Box, hopefully to see the light later this year.

Fresh from mastering the new Belbury Poly album , The Belbury Tales (more on this soon), Jon Brooks gets to grips with his newly built modular synthesizer. In another self imposed creative exercise, Jon has limited this work to simple overdubs using only the modular system with no multi-tracking or post-production. A remarkably lovely and fully realised piece of work it is too.

I think 03 is my favourite at the moment (I have to say though you could have tried harder on those titles Jon).

Secondly there's the exciting news that Jonny Trunk has set up a sister label to Trunk Records. Its called OST and it will be dedicated to contemporary scores and soundtracks. Jonny kindly sent the first release to the vicarage.

Its Adrian Corker's beautiful soundtrack to a new documentary film called Way of the Morris by Tim Plester. A delicate blend of electronics, traditional instruments and field recordings its not at all what you might expect. It also features performances from amongst others, the Adderbury Village Morris Men and Chris Leslie of Fairport Convention. Highly recommended.

John Foxx and The Maths Belbury Poly Remix

Following on from Interplay earlier this year, John Foxx and The Maths have just released The Shape of Things. It has a slightly different feel to Interplay and features songs that are more melancholic and introspective. There's also a selection of beautiful analogue instrumental miniatures.

This special edition is so far available only in the official John Foxx store, and comes with a bonus CD of remixes, including one of the Interplay track, Summerland by Belbury Poly. Here's a clip...

I post these excerpts not simply as an exercise in nostalgia - I never owned them as a kid and I can't imagine there would have been many children who were completely absorbed by them - it would have been a disappointing Christmas gift from a distant "auntie" perhaps, that would slowly grab your interest later in the year. But its instructive to remember how childrens' entertainment of this period, for some at least, lent a sense of enchantment to the world, maybe educated, but also mystified, terrified and occupied. You could say that these annuals are a kind of snapshot of British childrens' fiction and television of the period too. Its a glimpse of a world before CGI, licensing, Cowell and Cbeebies drained any real magic from our childrens' culture.

Concert of new work by Drew Mulholland

Drew Mulholland, the founder of Mount Vernon Arts Lab, is currently working as a composer in residence at Glasgow University. A concert of new pieces commissioned by the Department of Astronomy including Stella Nova inspired by the early 19th c. belief in the "Nebular Hypothesis" will be held in Glasgow in November.

Performers: Drew Mulholland, featuring the Edinburgh String Quartet, Jemma Knox (Percussion), Laura Baxter (Piano), and The Madrigirls (Choir).

This FREE concert begins at 7.30pm on 2nd November in the University of Glasgow Memorial Chapel.

The next Belbury Youth Club night will be held at the Green Man Festival, in South Wales on Friday, 19th August. We'll be teaming up with Birmingham's foremost film hounds 7" Cinema in the Cinema Tent from 7pm.

There'll be feature films, lost TV, a new Ghost Box film by Julian House and all manner of strange clips and loops. There'll be a special live guest, Pye Corner Audio, DJ sets from Ghost Box and 7" Cinema and more visuals right into the small hours.

John Foxx and The Maths - Interplay

I was very excited to receive the new album from John Foxx and the Maths this week from the kind people at Metamatic. Its called Interplay and is the result of a collaboration between Foxx and Benge the artist behind 2008's Twenty Systems album.

Benge's studio is home to an amazing collection of analogue synths and other antique gear, and its this incredible array of equipment that provides the rich sounding backbone to this album. I'd be the last person in the world to deny that recapturing the warmth of analogue studio sounds and tape is still something of a holy grail in the modern studio, but its an irony that modern digital recording techniques capture the fullness of analogue oscillator sounds far better than could be done when they were cutting edge technology. Don't even bother listening to this record on ear buds - turn it up on your dad's proper hi-fi and prepare to have your trousers or skirts flapped. I have no problem at all with the "vintage" presets of the fun little plastic synths that parp and poop away in a lot of contemporary electro pop, (indeed I have been known to do some plastic pooping myself) but its always instructive to be reminded of the gap between cheap emulation and heavy reality.

In places Interplay harks back to Foxx's first solo album, the classic Metamatic - especially the tracks Running Man and Watching A Building on Fire (which features Ladyton's Mira Aroyo). As well as the stark Ballardian worlds of Metamatic there are hints here of the dreamlike mysteries of The Garden (for example on Summerland) and the romantic glories of the The Golden Section (especially on The Good Shadow).

However, this is by no means part of the 80s road show come back brigade biz though. On one hand this is because Foxx was never very mainstream in the first place and on the other, because those of us who have always followed his career know that his output has been continuous, varied and endlessly (foxx fan ref there) creative. There is freshness and continuity here in equal measure, just as there is both analogue noise and great pop music.

Obviously I'm a big fan and at the risk of making this review seem even more partisan, I'll share the news with you that Jon Brooks (of The Advisory Circle) and I (of Belbury Poly) will be collaborating with John Foxx on a few tracks, for a project that will see the light of day on Ghost Box sometime in 2012. Yeah I know !

Study Series 5, "The Open Songbook", is by Hintermass a new collaboration between Jon Brooks of The Advisory Circle and Tim Felton of Seeland on vocals and guitar. For the first time pop music comes to Ghost Box, in the form of rich, melancholy song underpinned with haunting analogue electronics.

Number 6 is "Le Train Fantôme" from Jonny Trunk, the head of re-issue label Trunk Records and natural ally of the world of Ghost Box. On this single Trunk plays with a wonderfully woolly palette of electronic sound reminiscent of grainy old stop motion animation soundtracks.

Jonny Trunk to re-air the Broadcast OST show on Resonance today

Jonny Trunk will be airing a repeat of his OST show recorded December 2007, with Trish & James of Broadcast. Its on at 4:30 pm tonight on 104.4FM in London or via the stream at www.resonancefm.com or via the widget at the bottom right of this blog.

Earlier today we received the tragic news that Trish Keenan of Broadcast passed away in hospital following a long battle with pneumonia. On behalf of all the artists at Ghost Box I would like to express our deepest sympathies to Trish's family and to James.

Broadcast are our central and primary influence and Trish's passing leaves an immense gap in our world, we owe more than we can say to her friendship and support over the years.

An enormously talented, generous and beautiful visionary has gone on ahead to see the Summerland.

Warp Records have made a statement accompanied by what has now become such a poignant song.

We would also like to reiterate Warp's request for the proper respect of the privacy of Trish's family and friends.

Imperfect Recall - Exhibition 25th September to 20th November

London artist Paul Smith will be curating an exhibition titled Imperfect Recall, at The Architects Gallery, Teddington, South West London. Open to the public this Saturday, 25th September and running until 20th November, the exhibition features a variety of artists exploring false memories and the gaps between past and present, hostorical fact and recall. The work of Ghost Box's Julian House will be heavily featured in print video and artefacts.

The exhibition includes work by Adam Bainbridge, Ronald Ceuppens, Oona Culley, Simon Reid, Hugh Russell, Alexander Sirbu, Paul Smith, Ruth Uglow and Daniela White are also on display. This September is a big month for Ghost Box with the release of the next two singles in our Study Series. Study Series 03 "Welcome to Godalming" is a split single with Belbury Poly and Mordant Music who come together with two very different musical portraits of a small English town. Study Series 04 "Familiar Shapes and Noises" sees Broadcast and The Focus Group continuing the magickal collaboration begun on Warp's Witch Cults of the Radio Age.

Also due at the same time is Belbury Poly's Farmers Angles (Revised Edition) EP. This is an updated version of the first ever Ghost Box release. Back by popular demand, it'll be available on 10", CD and download. It features three new tracks, one a re-imagining of one of the originals by The Advisory Circle.

Electric Eden

I'm currently enjoying Rob Young's new book Electric Eden, a kind of psychological history of British folk music. The book traces a lineage of visionary music taking in composers, archivists, folk traditionalists, folk psyhcedelicists, rock outsiders, and contemporary electronic fantasists. The commonalities for this diverse crowd are identified as the yearnings for a golden age or an imagined past, and the influence of British literature, film and TV, rich with a sense for landscape and nostalgia. It is shown how, time and again this uniquely British sensibility is electrified with a keen sense of modernism and an awareness of what the future may or may not hold.

Its an epic and absorbing read and makes all kinds of truely enlightening connections. I'll say no more because I've not finished it yet (I did, of course, skip ahead to the back to read the bits about Ghost Box, so I know it ends well). Beware though, this book will seriously extend your music, reading and film wants lists and reading it will very probably cost you a fortune.

The book is published by Faber & Faber and is available just about everywhere. The Electric Eden Blog is here, and I gather there'll be an illustrated talk tomorrow night, 5th August, at The Wire Salon in Cafe Oto with guest Jonny Trunk playing some records.

Mr. Young also features in similar vein in a spot of lighter reading, kindly brought to our attention by parishioner Matthew Kempson.

This was given to me by a friend who found a box full of them while filming in a disused MOD base on Portsdown hill overlooking Portsmouth. Its made from two white cardboard discs with a clear plastic indicator and held together with a brass hinge.

So dialling the arrow at the bottom to a modest 5 Megaton bomb, and moving my indicator to my bunker's location at 4 miles from the centre of the blast, I see there is heavy to light damage to houses. Surprisingly, no one is dead but 10% are trapped in rubble. Of those not trapped 6% are seriously injured. I am further inconvenienced by "severe vehicle displacement".

Official advice therefore, as it tells us on teatowels and mugs up and down the country is to "Keep Calm and Carry On".

Super Impose - Kinsale

Séance at Notting Hill Gate

A couple of weeks ago workmen re-opened a tunnel in London's Notting Hill Gate tube station sealed since 1959 when escalators were installed to replace the lifts. This revealed a hoard of untouched posters which are soon to be removed and archived by The Museum of London. The pictures were taken by Mikey Ashworth for London Underground and the full set can be seen here.

Music critic and author Ken Hollings dropped a note through the vicarage door to let us know that a recent episode of his Resonance FM show, Hollingsville entitled "Dreams: While the City Sleeps", features Julian House talking about dreams, cutups and sixties spectral transmissions and is available as a podcast from this link.

Also the June issue of INTO, the sound and music online publication, has just put up a shortened version of Ken's essay 'Spaceship UK' . This was commissioned for The Sonar festival and presents a history of British electronic music including Tristram Carey, Joe Meek, The Radiophonic Workshop, and Ghost Box in a context of British science fiction and bygone visions of the future.

Ghost Box Study Series Singles

Ghost Box is about to release the first two parts of a regular series of seven inch and download singles.

The first two singles will be available from the Ghost Box shop from the 2nd July. Study Series 01, titled "Youth and Recreation" is the result of collaboration between Belbury Poly and Moon Wiring Club.

Study Series 02, "Cycles and Seasons" by The Advisory Circle, features a special vocal version of the Advisory Circle track Seasons, called Seasons Change by Hong Kong in the 60s.

The series will feature new work from the Ghost Box artists and feature new music, collaborations and remixes by a variety of guests including Mordant Music, Moon Wiring Club, Jonny Trunk, Hong Kong in the 60s, Xylitol, and James Cargill & Trish Keenan (of Broadcast).

Sharp eyed collectors will have noticed that the Study Series name and design is an homage to the series of BBC schools albums of the 1970s.

Moving Through Old Daylight

As part of John Foxx's Analogue event at the Roundhouse in Camden, Ghost Box have been invited to take part in discussion panel, along with author Iain Sinclair and John Foxx himself.

The discussion will be chaired by Mark (k-Punk) Fisher and illustrated with film and sets out to explore the overlap between the panel members' work. How are places saturated with the traces of past events? How do technologies affect memory, and what role does fiction play in allowing us to map the haunted spaces of the city? The event entitled "Moving Through Old Daylight", will be held at the Roundhouse's Studio Theatre, 5th June 4:30 pm.

John Foxx and Benge at work in Play Studios

Julian and I were thrilled to be invited along to Benge's Play Studios to hear some tracks from the forthcoming album that the duo will be releasing under the name of John Foxx and the Maths late summer / autumn 2010. The tracks we were privileged to hear were incredible, Benge's synth museum providing an authentic and rich back bone to lyrics elegantly poised between the Romantic and the Ballardian.

Admittedly as a long time fan , I'm a little star struck and possibly prone to hyperbole, but this is my most eagerly awaited album release of the year. From what we heard this record will encapsulate the stark, newness of Metamatic, the soaring Romance of Foxx's epic 80s albums, the lush choral cloudscapes of Catherdral Oceans and Mirroball and the laser guided synth pop of Shifitng City. Whats more its sounds thoroughly contemporary and I think will be adored by the current generation of artists influenced, unconsciously or not, by Mr. Foxx's oeuvre.

The main event at the Roundhouse on 5th June of course is the live show, which will be performed on a an impressive array of analogue gear. As well as Benge, John Foxx will be joined on stage by former Ultravox guitarist, Robin Simon.

Resonance FM Fundraiser this Weekend

This weekend , 1st & 2nd May please lend your support to the Resonance FM fundraiser. You can do this by bidding for all kinds of exciting art, music and objets in the weekend long auction or just by listening and spreading the word.

Two marathon sessions will be anchored by Jonny Trunk on Saturday and Bob & Roberta Smith on Sunday. You can listen in London on 104.4 FM or anywhere in the world on the website or, easiset of all, on the little gizmo at the right hand side of this blog.

Here's what Mr. Trunk has to say about it...

"This coming Saturday I am broadcasting for 12 hours on Resonance FM. The station is 8 years old and is having a 12 am to 12 pm super fundraiser on both Saturday and Sunday with all money raised going to keep the station up and running. The station is a charity by the way.

We have a whole heap of fabulous and strange things up for auction - rare records, weird days out, superb clothing, one off art, paintings, posters, instruments, studio equipment, scooter wear, even some superb and desirable wine has been donated. My current fave is the bespoke racing overall (like Steve McQueen wears in Le Mans, or Elvis in Speedway or like that bloke wears in the impossible dream Honda advert), which will be made in a colour and size of your choice.

Donations to the auction have come from some superb sources: Stewart Lee, Christian Marclay, YMC, Rapha, Sounds Of The Universe, Pete Fowler, Ghost Box, Julian House, The BFI, Henry Cow, Throbbing Gristle, Bob And Roberta Smith, The Chapman's, The Winery, Fuel etc, and I'm even putting up some rare vinyl I was saving for a rainy day, like a Tubby Hayes Voodoo test pressing and stuff like that. I've had a look at some of the bits and bobs up for grabs, and I really like the Pete Fowler painting he's done just for the auction, of a bear playing a synth in the woods with all these UFOS coming in.

Anyway, the show will be broadcast live on Sat 1st May from 12am to 12pm, we will be taking bids on line and on air too. The show can be heard on 104.4 FM (not digital) if you are in London, or can be streamed live on www.resonancefm.com. And the station takes paypal, so paying for anything you win is almost painless."

The first in a monthly series of salon-type evenings hosted by The Wire at East London’s Cafe Oto venue. For this opening event, Mark Fisher (K-Punk) heads a panel debating the uncanny quality of so much contemporary audio, from spectral disco to dubstep, Hypnagogic pop and beyond. Penda's Fen

When Andrew Male of Mojo magazine introduced us to the film Penda's Fen, it was unfamiliar to me but one image immediately connected to a haunting memory that had howled around in the back of my label colleague's mind since childhood.

As a (very young) kid in 1974 Julian House had crept down to peep in at the lounge door on the adults only world of post watershed TV. An image of a teenage boy waking from a nightmare only to be met by the malevolent gaze of a demon squatting on his chest seared into his mind and set him scurrying back to bed.

This sweaty seventies rendering of Fuseli's Nightmare is one of the more powerful images in the film but it shouldn't mislead you into thinking this was just another of the era's late night supernatural chillers. Written by David Rudkin and directed by Alan Clarke , it's partly the redemptive story of an awkward outsider coming to terms with his sexuality, but it also deals with the eternal struggle of Christianity and Paganism at the heart of English identity and landscape. Its a truly beautiful piece of visionary mysticism.

Tickets are now on sale for the Belbury Youth Club Night on Sunday 28th March in Birmingham's Vivid. You can get tickets and details here (there'll also be a limited number of tickets on the door). Starting at 5:00pm there'll be some unsettling TV drama, new animations from Julian House, Public Informations Films, and a new version of the short film Winter Sun Wavelength with a new Focus Group and Belbury Poly soundtrack. Then from around 8:00 in the evening we'll have music from the Ghost Box DJs and special live guest Moon Wiring Club.

Jon pre-recorded the show on Wednesday and by all accounts had a splendid time, amongst tracks from the new album they'll be playing an exclusive Advisory Circle track you won't hear anywhere else.

Ghost Box is not currently listed in searches under Google. If you visit the website this way rest assured that things are up and running as usual, and you'll still find the site over at:

www.ghostbox.co.uk

It seems likely that by pure bad luck we were indexed on the very day the site went down last month. We're doing all we can to get this fixed, so meanwhile don't be fooled into buying any dodgy spook hunting hardware.

Belbury Youth Club Night comes to Birmingham

The next Belbury Youth Club Night will be held at Vivid in Birmingham on Sunday 28th March as part of the Flatpack festival.

There'll be a mixed schedule of public information films, haunted old TV programmes, and a new version of Julian House's short film Winter Sun Wavelength with a soundtrack by the Focus Group & Belbury Poly and an exhibition of some of Julian House's artwork for Ghost Box.

Then at around 8 o'clock it'll be shoes off and chairs away for a live performance from our special guest Moon Wiring Club, followed by music, movement and more films from the Ghost Box DJs.

5pm until late, £7.00. Tickets will be available from flatpack at the end of February

Our thanks to those of you that noticed that the Ghost Box website was down for a couple of days. There was a small technical problem but everything is now up and running as usual.

His Name Was Legion, Andrew Caldecott's supernatural tale, adapted for radio by Lawrence Norfolk and Belbury Poly, will be aired on Resonance FM on 28th January at midnight.

The story is part of a radio event called Weird Tales for Winter organised by Jonny Mugwump to be broadcast over 8 days from 25th January 2010.

You can listen on 104.4FM if you're in London or otherwise you can stream Resonance live through their website or even easier, via the gizmo over on the right hand side of this very blog. If you miss this story or any of the others you can "listen again" at the Weird Tales for Winter microsite for a week or so after the broadcast. Strange Attractor Salon

Friend of the parish, Mark Pilkington will be curating the Strange Attractor Salon at Viktor Wynd Fine Art (incorporating The Little Shoppe of Horrors), 11 Mare Street, London, UK, E8 4RP. The residency opens this Thursday, 7th January.

The Salon will incorporate a wide range of media (painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, sound and video) from both trained and untrained artists, including work by Ghost Box's Julian House. The assembled exhibitors all share Strange Attractor’s fascinations with inner space, craft, science (natural and unnatural) and the fantastic.
